Activity Description

History of the Bothongo Wonder Cave:
This is a Self-Drive activity, the facility is situated inside the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve and cannot be accessed by foot. We do not offer or provide transport and you need your own transport to reach the WonderCave.

The cave was discovered by Italian miners in 1898. They mined out approximately 15% from the formation and brought them to the surface. The formation consists of calcite which they placed in a self-built oven for 2 weeks at about 1100 degrees. This formed a powder which was taken by ox wagon to Pretoria & Johannesburg to make cement, toothpaste, use to extract gold, and the like. Mining was stopped in 1902 due to the outbreak of war and low productivity.
This is the 3rd largest chamber in South Africa, the largest being Cango Caves and the second largest Sudwala Caves.

Customer Reviews

Wonderful cave and our guide Roxy was extremely well informed and could answer all of our questions. She knew the caves and their history through and through! Facilities were good and check-in was smooth and painless. Will definitely recommend seeing the cave but would also recommend taking comfortable walking shoes as the stairs are hard on your feet. - Marcel

The place was incredibly welcoming. A friend forgot her phone in one of the bathrooms at the snake park, and the security officers, along with a staff member from the restaurant, went out of their way to help us retrieve it. Excellent service! - Bongani

Excellent guides but far too may people on thr tour spoiled it. - Warren

was amazing. family had an amazing time. Only thing that dissappointed us was the restaurant. Food was terrible, and we waited a very long time (2+ hours for 3 meals) but other than that, great experience - Matthew

One of the best experiences. Will definately recommend it and will visit again. - Kobie
