Activity Description

History of the Bothongo Wonder Cave:

The cave was discovered by Italian miners in 1898. They mined out approximately 15% from the formation and brought them to the surface. The formation consists of calcite which they placed in a self-built oven for 2 weeks at about 1100 degrees. This formed a powder which was taken by ox wagon to Pretoria & Johannesburg to make cement, toothpaste, use to extract gold, and the like. Mining was stopped in 1902 due to the outbreak of war and low productivity.
This is the 3rd largest chamber in South Africa, the largest being Cango Caves and the second largest Sudwala Caves.

Customer Reviews

Excellent! We really enjoyed it. - Carin

It was a great educational day at the caves. Didi was a good guide, very informative. The cave is really beautiful and something you have to experience. My 3 year old enjoyed it. The self drive through the park was also really amazing. We ended the day at the playpark at the restaurant - relaxing. - Madeleen

The cave was far more impressive than we anticipated as we had already been to the biggest one in SA. The stories and history about the cave was interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable. We weren't going to do the self drive as we'd already been on a Safari earlier in the week but glad we did. We saw loads of animals on the drive and the wildlife center had loads of animals we hadn't seen. All in all, it was a great day out and worth the money. - Chantel

1st thing, online reservation is great, very user friendly. Predator feeding is an exceptional experience, your staff controlling the flow of traffic there, are doing an awesome work. The kiosk is your best kept secret, the animals there are so welcoming & friendly, plus the reptile show.I felt like they came closer to greet us.I didn't even know you had such a variety on animals there. The self drive was so easy, not overwhelming, not difficult to spot game.the rhino's & zebras gave us a treat. Then there is the 'The Thatch Hub'i would call it that, with the reception, cafe restaurant,, shops, Okavango deck & kiddies Entertainment.Excellently thought out space. To top it all off was the caves tour, such a unique experience with solid history. Our guide(Bongs) was great. Visited more than 10 years back, was impressed with new developments, but appreciated how the originals were maintained as well. Was part of mine & my niece's birthday celebrations, & thoroughly enjoyed?? - Puseletso

The cave looks lovely and very well maintained. Beautiful place to visit and I will recommend to everyone even though it is a bit overpriced for South Afrikaans. The guide person was knowledgeable, very kind and patient since we had elderlies and very small children in the group. Receptionists ( all three of them) work like the robots: 0 smile or expression on their place. In one moment we wanted to give up of the visit as lady presented as a very difficult place to be because of 86 steps, but so glad we decided to go and see that underground beauty! Receptionists, you are presenting your country and your culture, you are the first contact with the tourists and visitors, please show a bit of smile or kindness so we can all feel welcomed! - jelena
