Activity Description

History of the Bothongo Wonder Cave:

The cave was discovered by Italian miners in 1898. They mined out approximately 15% from the formation and brought them to the surface. The formation consists of calcite which they placed in a self-built oven for 2 weeks at about 1100 degrees. This formed a powder which was taken by ox wagon to Pretoria & Johannesburg to make cement, toothpaste, use to extract gold, and the like. Mining was stopped in 1902 due to the outbreak of war and low productivity.
This is the 3rd largest chamber in South Africa, the largest being Cango Caves and the second largest Sudwala Caves.

Customer Reviews

what an amazing experience it was visiting bothongo. So many different animals to see, and what's even more awesome is that most of them are free to roam around and be animals. The snake show was amazing. That zoo like section with the tiger was so informative and fun. It is such a huge place we didn't even get to see the hippos, meaning you will be hearing from us soon hahaha, it is super kid friendly we will be bringing our boy here. Just a really good and fun place to be at. Thank you so much. - Mmatshwene

Unsatisfactory Experience at WonderCave due to Time Schedule. I am writing to express my disappointment with my Birthday get away visit to WonderCave, specifically with the self-drive option. While the cave itself was impressive, I was unsatisfied with the time schedule provided. The time allocated for the cave's natural wonders I have chosen was 4pm-5pm. I come from far Vereeniging to do something different for my Birthday but after The Wondercave tour I was excited to start my self-drive experience just to find the peditors, The Boma and everything included with self-drive tour was closed @5pm which I felt was disappointing and ridiculous.. I had looked forward to a more leisurely experience, but the tight schedule made it difficult to enjoy. I kindly request that you consider revising the time schedule for self-drive tours to allow visitors more time to explore the self-drive package. This would greatly enhance the overall experience and provide a more satisfying visit for your guests. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope to hear from you soon. - SAMANTHA

Excellent! We really enjoyed it. - Carin

It was a great educational day at the caves. Didi was a good guide, very informative. The cave is really beautiful and something you have to experience. My 3 year old enjoyed it. The self drive through the park was also really amazing. We ended the day at the playpark at the restaurant - relaxing. - Madeleen

The cave was far more impressive than we anticipated as we had already been to the biggest one in SA. The stories and history about the cave was interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable. We weren't going to do the self drive as we'd already been on a Safari earlier in the week but glad we did. We saw loads of animals on the drive and the wildlife center had loads of animals we hadn't seen. All in all, it was a great day out and worth the money. - Chantel
